Thinktanks emerged and arose in the XX-th century, out of a belief that reason and intelligence could solve all the problems of society. They proliferated during the Cold War as a way to prevent nuclear war and to suggest ways forward in the face of the otherwise intractable struggle between Western democracy and Eastbloc communism.
