Статья посвящена одному из ключевых аспектов западной системы представлений о России, сложившейся в течение последних столетий. На примере работ Алексиса де Токвиля и Макса Вебера показано, как образ России трансформировался в сознании ведущих европейских мыслителей, отражая сложности самоидентификации западных интеллектуалов. Выдвинуто предположение о том, что последняя трансформация восприятия России на Западе, начавшаяся в XXI в., во многом имеет те же социокультурные и философские предпосылки.

 

“The trial of Europe”: Russia as viewed by Alexis de Tocqueville and Max Weber

The author of the article emphasizes one of the key aspects of the Western image of Russia which has taken shape during the last centuries. By the example of Alexis de Tocqueville’s and Max Weber’s works it is shown how the image of Russia as viewed by the leading European thinkers transformed and reflected the difficulties of self-identification the Western intellectuals came across during the modern age. It is assumed that the previous transformation of the image of Russia in the West which took place at the beginning of the 21st century can be to a great extent explained by the same sociocultural and philosophical premises.
