Ivan Pryzhov as a Mirror of Russian Socialism, Drunkenness and Holy Foolery

    Vasilyev K.

Abstract:  The author's essay is based principally on the writings of Ivan Pryzhov (1827-85), an independent scholar and a member of the secret radical group called “People's Reprisal”. Tried for murder he was sentenced to twelve years of hard labour and died in Siberia. The author does not regard Pryzhov as a major historian and a moral person. At the same time he thinks that Pryzhov's articles and books are useful for a better understanding of Russian history. They concerned the production and consumption of alcohol in Russia over a long period of time, and they provide a lively story of the Russian tavern with all its peculiarities and customers. Pryzhov dealt with beggars and the so called holy fools, and he shared with the reader his personal experiences.
