The rejected god: Apollo from ancient Greeks to modern times

Murzin N., Institute of philosophy RAS

Abstract: Apollo is one of the most significant and even “philosophical” gods of the Ancient World and possibly of all worlds and times. He is often portrayed as the ideal image of all that is “intellectual” and “spiritual” in man’s nature, and so far an opposite to the irrational, chaotic and barbaric side of being. New wave of interest in this figure was caused by Nietzsche’s famous work “The Birth of Tragedy”, though at the same time, it marked the beginning of “Apollo’s eclipse”, which meant that Dionysus, Apollo’s brother and metaphysical antagonist, became more “popular”, important and mind-affecting entity, beneficiating from Nietzsche’s breakthrough and making Apollo almost disappear in deep shadows of misunderstanding and shallow interpretations. In this article, by analyzing amidst all other things some classical works dedicated to antique mythology, I try to show why this “eclipse” was not just an invention/inclination of Nietzsche and his decadent followers, but to some extent existed always in the body of our culture in all its aspects which are based on Ancient Greek heritage. So the main theme of the article is the phenomenon of “Apollo’s rejection” as it went throughout centuries and shown itself in many different sources, disciplines, works of art and systems of thought: its fixation, description, and possible ways of correction.
