ETHNIC NATIONALISM WITHIN THE EXISTING SYSTEM
Some thinkers on the left indeed view nationalism as the ‘socialism of the stupid.’ This expresses the idea that ethnic nationalists believe that social and economic hardship are caused by foreign elements that undermine the health and cohesiveness of the nation state, rather than by the way that the political economy is organized.

NATIONALISMS OF THE RULING CLASS
De facto, the Russian authorities are not implementing a single nationalistoriented project. This is related to the lack of a certain ideological unity in the ranks of the Russian authorities. The Russian authorities have several ideological options, which, one way or another, can be described as nationalistic, as well as a few ideological options, which cannot possibly be described as nationalistic.

‘THE YUGOSLAV SCENARIO’ IS NOT POSSIBLE IN RUSSIA
The collapse of the socialist Yugoslavia demonstrated that it was a project that completely failed in terms of nation or state building. It is debatable as to whether this was simply a failure or whether this downfall was somehow supported by external forces.
