Yaroslavl Forum Newsletter, March 14, 2011

Yaroslavl Forum Newsletter

The topic of the issue is 'Elites and Masses: Contempt, Indifference, and Hatred'

How conflicting are relations between the elites and the masses? What words should be used to describe relations between the masses and the elites – is it distrust, mutual hatred, indifference, mutual understanding? Can anti-elite feelings rally the masses and give birth to a new political subject? Are there any groups in the political sphere that are capable of playing on this anti-elite sentiment?

In the issue, these and many other questions shall be answered by:

Richard Pipes, an American academic specialising in Russian history; John Milbank, a theologian and the Director of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham (UK); Dmitry Butrin, the Head of the Economic Policy Department of the newspaper Kommersant; Bo Zhiyue, a Professor at the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore; Adrian Pabst, a Professor at the University of Kent (UK); Dmitry Yuriev, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the St. Petersburg branch of the party ‘United Russia’; Ilya Kalinin, Editor-in-chief of the magazine Neprikosnovennij Zapas; Michael Kazin, the co-editor of the magazine Dissent; Fedor Girenok, a philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at Moscow State University; and Oleg Nemenskiy, a political scientist, historian and Member of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Science.

The newsletter also presents Dan Gardner, a Canadian writer, futurologist and the author of the best seller «Risk: The Science and Politics of Fear»

FEAR IS THE BEST TOOL

Fear is enormously important in a democratic society. When you have a large portion of the population that is afraid of some thing, democracy is responsive, and political leaders give them what they want, even when it doesn’t make any sense whatso ever.

THE TIMES OF STEEP EXPECTATIONS

First of all, it is because elites are much more visible nowadays, something that is related to the development of the mass media. For example, someone like Queen Victoria could have been hidden away from everybody else for decades, whereas nowadays peo ple in power are always in the pub lic eye. Look at what recently hap pened to Berlusconi, and that’s just the latest example.
