U.S. Transportation Command is the right headquarters to serve as the foundation for a new global organization that can move the joint force where it is needed and ensure that the defense supply chain responds to demands with precision and speed. It would include the headquarters and five functional component commands each with air, land, and sea modal components that would have the assets to deploy into the area of operations, a distribution operations component able to give adaptive distribution center support down to the operational level, and a global supply component to meet the joint customers’ supply needs. The baseline exists; there are global commercial structures, and headquarters can focus on supply chain planning, flexible response, global risk analysis, and customer outcomes. Blending supply and distribution will enable the military to project forces anywhere with the assurance of timely and adaptive logistic support. |
