The debate over weaponizing space is complicated by inability to define what space weapons are except for those that pose a substantial danger to humanity, namely weapons of mass destruction. Past that brief moment of clarity, it becomes pointless trying to limit technological advance. More is accomplished influencing and regulating state behavior. Peaceful disputation can be convincing and can slow or halt escalation, but present international accords do not offer enforceable ways of handling claims regarding harmful space activity. The existing forum depends on diplomacy, leaving the need for a standing committee with the stature, knowledge, and fairness to regulate, monitor, and adjudicate, ideally the United Nations, helped by the economic deterrence and enforcement powers of the World Trade Organization. |
