Despite progress, the military contributions and careers of women continue to be challenged. Canada, Norway, and Sweden have long experience and report that full integration took a decade. The United States has substantial experience of its own, and accounts of success are plentiful along with statements that mixing the genders in combat-risky circumstances has not compromised missions or lowered morale. Successfully integrated units have leadership that maintains the same expectations and ensures fair treatment of their people regardless of gender. Servicemembers emulate behavior they see higher up, and that coupled with a variety of other steps will help the Services move forward with full integration |
