Operational Design and the Center of Gravity: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
By inquiring into root problems and logically sequencing first, enemy and friendly centers of gravity are illuminated by the discrete steps of operational design. Asking how the problem can be solved or how and by what capability a center of gravity should be attacked gives commanders more insight into their own centers of gravity. Going after centers of gravity before defining the problem and before beginning development of an operational approach undermines the usefulness of operational design. Doctrinal adjustments are specified that can resolve this issue. These initiatives and clarifying the relationship between operational design and centers of gravity will increase their linkages and encourage more directly applicable doctrine
