Core values statements are a two-edged sword. Properly conceived, they motivate and inspire military practitioners. Improperly conceived, they obfuscate the performance of duty and the philosophical underpinnings of the entire military enterprise. If the core values statements of the Services truly contain universal truth, what distinguishes the statements found in the profession of arms from those of other professions? Why is there variation among Services that relegate values statements to the kind of cultural and operational differences found in, for instance, uniforms? Warriors should be able to give a coherent and cogent account of their organizations’ values. It is time to evaluate the Services’ values statements to ensure they are taught, understood, pondered, and usable; otherwise they should be redone. |
