The paper analyzes the key historical features of the formation of industrial identity and the potential ways of its conversion into actual cultural politics, by focusing on two examples of the old industrial regions of Russia, namely, Central Textile Area (Ivanovo and Moscow Region) and Ural Region. The author shows that the formation of the identity of the textile region was determined by a rich pre-revolutionary heritage, supplemented by a powerful revolutionary myth, while for the cities of Ural, which emerged as a result of several waves of industrial colonization, the specific industrial pride was of special importance. Such pride was generated not so much by the tale of glorious past but rather by the actual industrial process and the mastery of newest technologies. The industrial heritage, presented by older structures and facilities, was at times becoming unsuitable as a subject of pride and thus was demolished or totally rebuilt. Moreover, the textile industry of the Central area is poorly consolidated, while the industry of Ural, on the contrary, is built around the oligopoly of the largest industrial companies operating in the fields of metallurgy and heavy machine-building. For this reason, in the case of the Central Old Textile Areal, we should expect a revitalization of the industrial heritage in the context of historical and ethnic branding, complementing the influential system of the Golden Ring and focusing on satisfying the demand from populous and rich city of Moscow. In the case of the Urals, one might expect the development of a set of cultural clusters — “steel Disneylands” — in the cities like Magnitogorsk, Verkhnaya Pyshma or Pervouralsk, where the key production facilities of the leading industrial companies are located.
