Russian culture/civilization project in its special features
and historical formation.
Culture as a base and the origins of culture

Murzin N.,
Institute of philosophy RAS

Abstract: Culture in an all-embracing sense is a sum of habitudes common to a group of people separated from any other likely group by the boundaries which form ethnically, linguistically and territorially. That’s the profane definition, adequate to a horizontal dimension of any culture. Yet the cultures mature and advanced show also (and maybe it’s even more important) the vertical dimension characterized by the conscious creation and establishment of its upper level of matrix examples and universal normative. It’s the principle of every strong culture, both an opposite and an accomplishment to its mere historical beginning and natural formation. In this article the author analyzes how the Russian culture/civilization project operates on the base of these origins and develops its distinctive historical features and peculiarities. Special attention is given to the problem of the Normative Other as a constant gestalt figure of influence that Russian cultural strategy both needs and denies. The author comes to certain conclusions on this matter such as: 1) Russian cultural/historical project is seriously oriented on the replication/adoption/transformation of the normative and achievements of other cultures — while the first are considered Universal, and the second, thus, Hegemonic, Dominant; 2) through time it starts to require mostly products and technologies of the Normative Other than social and political institutes which allow the, to be created and developed further — thus it’s more about the result than the process, sharing, becoming a part and alike; 3) it longs to resemble the Other Dominant Culture in a surface way more than substantial, and that leads to the combination of hollow imitation and inner conflict; 4) summing it all up, Russian cultural/historical project tends very seriously to grow into a ressentimental type of human formation, brooding strongly on the themes of its own «secondness», «imitation», «falling behind» as compared to the Dominant Culture grom which would constantly spring the desire for conflict, revenge, the underlining of its specialness, dignity and independency.
