The topic of the issue is 'Elites and Masses: Contempt, Indifference, and Hatred'
How conflicting are relations between the elites and the masses? What words should be used to describe relations between the masses and the elites – is it distrust, mutual hatred, indifference, mutual understanding? Can anti-elite feelings rally the masses and give birth to a new political subject? Are there any groups in the political sphere that are capable of playing on this anti-elite sentiment?
In the issue, these and many other questions shall be answered by:
Richard Pipes, an American academic specialising in Russian history; John Milbank, a theologian and the Director of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham (UK); Dmitry Butrin, the Head of the Economic Policy Department of the newspaper Kommersant; Bo Zhiyue, a Professor at the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore; Adrian Pabst, a Professor at the University of Kent (UK); Dmitry Yuriev, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the St. Petersburg branch of the party ‘United Russia’; Ilya Kalinin, Editor-in-chief of the magazine Neprikosnovennij Zapas; Michael Kazin, the co-editor of the magazine Dissent; Fedor Girenok, a philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at Moscow State University; and Oleg Nemenskiy, a political scientist, historian and Member of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Science.
