The article deals with humanitarian excursions of the early 20th century as means of overcoming historical crisis at the turn of the century («fin de siècle»). An important issue is a study of meaning of the following words “an excursionist”, “an excursion” and a “tourist” at different times. The author of the article attempts to show tourist development and excursions conditions, which were not treated as a way to commercialize. Excursions of the early 20th century are viewed as commemorative practices used for individual and collective self-identification
